I have been a drummer since the age of ten, when my Dad, who was a jazz drummer, showed me the ropes. He has had, and continues to have, a lot of influence with music in my life. The very first album my dad introduced to me was Simply Red’s “Stars” along with Average White Band. I guess that was where my soul/funk roots started. I come from a large musical family, both my father and uncle are drummers and my brother is a guitarist/songwriter.
Whist still at school I began to enjoy the slick soul sounds of Stevie Wonder. I also became a big fan of Chick Corea and Weather Report. I would play the drums along to their music. I have always been inspired by Chick Corea’s Dave Weckl and I have learnt a lot from him. I have always been influenced by various drummers, including Buddy Rich (always the master!), Dennis Chambers , Mark Mondesir, Steve Gadd, John Blackwell and Vinny Colaiuta. I have also always been a big fan of Jamiroquai’s Derrick McKenzie. When it comes to funk, this man can really lay down a groove!
One of my biggest learning experiences was at the age of fifteen when I joined the East Norfolk Jazz Orchestra, which I was a member of for five years. I toured France, Belgium and the United States of America with this band, whilst continuing to study and later achieve a National Diploma in Popular Music at college.
I have been in various different bands from an early age up to the present time, playing many different styles of music ranging from jazz, latin, soul, funk and reggae through to drum ‘n’ bass. As well as playing the drums, I have co-written, composed and performed original material, which was played live and recorded on to CD. These songs included influences by Jamiroquai, Incognito, Tower of Power, Prince, Erykah Badu, Miles Davis and Jill Scott. This was the first band that my brother Greg and I were involved in together. Some of my best experiences with this band was playing at Colchester Institute and on BBC Radio. I have also played percussion for various shows and gigs.
I am currently composing and performing live whenever I can. |
